THE NOT-SO-NEW FACIAL WE’RE ALL JUST NOW GOING CRAZY OVER

Beauty bloggers are raving about it, clients are hooked on it, and estheticians are choosing it as their favorite treatment to perform. So what is it? It’s the not-so-new, but newly hyped up facial treatment we call dermaplaning.

Everyone is talking about this new and amazing facial treatment, dermaplaning. Except it’s not so new, at all. I personally learned how to do the treatment over 10 years ago. It’s always been one of my very favorite facial treatments because the results are so wonderfully consistent and amazing. However, I did shy away from it for a while because clients were scared of it.

Today we are braver than ever when it comes to skincare. Why? Because, we’ve all decided to jump on the beautiful skincare train, and are loving every minute of the ride. So what makes it so scary? Well, for starters it’s done with a surgical scalpel. Yikes!!! That immediately causes clients to pause. But not to worry, we aren’t actually cutting into your skin. Essentially, we are scraping away a significant amount of the dead layer of skin. The side effect everyone is raving about is the fact that all your peach fuzz comes off with those gross and nasty dead skin cells. In fact, a lot of clients think that is what the treatment is for. But that is, in fact, just a side effect. I try to direct my clients to the main point of exfoliation and keep them away from fixating on the hair removal part of it. Sure, it’s an awesome side effect, but that isn’t the point of the treatment.

WHAT TO EXPECT AFTER YOUR TREATMENT

Expect silky, smooth, radiant skin. Expect your makeup to go on so beautifully. Expect your pores and texture to improve significantly. The list goes on and on, but my personal favorite result from dermaplaning is how much better my products absorb into my skin. Where are my product junkies at?  If that’s you, get ready to see the results from every precious penny spent on products, because you’re about to see how much quicker and more efficiently they will work.

DO YOUR HOMEWORK

I want to encourage clients to do their homework before going just anywhere to get this treatment done. A lot of estheticians are leaving clients scratched up with very superficial (but still scary) slits all over the face. The reason for these nicks is because we naturally want to tilt the blade up more vertically, and it’s critical that the blade is horizontal and almost completely flat against the skin. When tilted up, the blade is cutting the face, and no longer safely scraping. Even then, when performed by the most experienced estheticians, there are likely chances of tiny nicks. Every person’s facial structure, oil production, texture, etc. is so different than the client before, that we run into challenging skin types. Those little nicks are inevitable, but clients usually are not at all affected by them. The other reason for nicks is due to a chatty client. We always try our best to ask clients to be very still, and to pause telling a story, because any movement of the mouth can result in a cut, nick, or slice.

Do your homework, read reviews, ask questions! But do not be afraid of this fabulous, instant results-oriented facial treatment. It will rapidly become a staple in your beauty routine.
